Internet Security and Free Programs

I fell somewhat vindicated with my statement that Most People would do as well with AVG Antivirus (free version) and ZoneAlarm (again, the Free Version), as Maximum PC’s November Issue listed both programs as essential apps.

Spyware Checking is another matter; none of the free ones are as effective as some of the “paid” versions. I currently use Microsoft Defender, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and a new one (at least to me) that I read about in Maximum PC called A Squared Each One find stuff that other missed.

Hijack This is a very powerful program, that can deal with some of the worse infections , but if you don’t know what you are doing, you can do more harm than good, with this program.

If you are going with free programs, I would suggest you periodically scan with all of them.

If you are willing to buy one then the one I would go with is probably Webroot Spysweeper. I’ve used it, and it is easy to use and quite effective, as it runs in the background and catches Spyware before it can get installed.

Of the Free Ones, MS Defender is the only one that does this.

On a More Practical Note....

Now that Norton 2007 programs have been released, Deal's abound on the 2006 products. While I am not a real big fan of Norton's, mainly because their 2004 products which totally sucked, I will admit that their programs now are totally acceptable. And at the shop, we sell and install Norton 3 times more often than their nearest competitor.

Something just bugs me about a company that has to issue special programs every year to "uninstall their products" when normal installation and uninstall don't work.

Personally I think most people would do as well with the free version of "AVG Anti-Virus", and the free version of "Zone Alarm". But that's just me.

Wasting Time Playing Games Part 1

Back in the days of the IBM AT, when I was still running an 8086, because 286 machines were too expensive, Microprose released a little game called "F19 Stealth Fighter". I spent hours playing this game; when 386's came out and I took out a loan to buy one (Only $1500.00) the game got really good, since I could turn all the enhancements on, play it in VGA, and the game play was incredibly smooth.

Well, rooting through some old boxes, I found a copy of it on a 3 1/2 disk, I had made. I hadn't played it in years, as I only had the original disks, 3 ea 5 1/4 360K floppies. So I whipped it out, and found it played just fine in DOS Box, complete with adlib sound.

And now I am trying to get back my skills on the game, as I used to play it with dificulties and missions maxed out to 10. Now I can't even do a friggin landing, even though they have ILS and landing set to easy!

This game is freely available on "Abandon Ware" sites. If you decide you want to give it a try, and the version you get doesn't have the AdLib Sound Drivers, drop me some email, and I will get them to you.

Blast from the Past part 1 - silly time wasters
Ah the old days, when things were simpler and we were more easilier amused. Such things are the Hamster Dance were the "cool" thing of the hour. Simple animated gifs, with a looping sound track, why that is almost "video" or was back then.

Yahoo and Current TV have got together to launch what is supposed to be online "TV Network". Checking it out, it has a shortage of content at the moment, but what I saw was fairly amusing, and it has potential.....

Rant: Why is their quality so poor? I realize that they have no choice in the matter of user supplied content, but surely Yahoo has enough bandwidth to supply a better quality image of their own content. As it is now, it is pretty much unwatchable at full screen.
